I recently read Skip the line by James Altucher. In this article, I'll share 4 ideas from the book.
About The Book
If we want to learn or do something then what comes to our mind is to take the traditional route.
As an example, if we want to learn to code the obvious path is to take a CS degree or if we want to start a business then the path is to take a Business degree and so on.
But sometimes we don't have the time, energy, and resource to take a 4 year CS degree or a BBA to learn how to do coding and do a business.
In James's words that obvious path is the Line.
James in this book shared his journey of skipping the line. From being a junior programmer analyst to running a show for HBO. And building billion-dollar businesses and many more.
In this article, I'll share 5 key ideas from Skip the line.
#1. The One % rule
Improve 1 percent every day, save one dollar every day. And you'll have $37.78 and 37.78% improvement.
That's the way thing works. We can't become a programmer or writers or a poet at once.
We need to practice every day, improve 1% each day. And then one day we will reach that level.
#2. 10,000 experiment rule
If you want to Skip the Line, you need to do 10,000 experiments. To get there faster you need to practice effectively. And you can do that with the 10,000 experiment rules.
If you are trying to become a public speaker. Then speak. Speak at school on street at a family event. Cause you need to speak 10,000 times before you get comfortable.
Here's what James says about the 10,000 experiment rule.
What I’m talking about is an entirely different method from the 10,000 hours of practice that you’ve heard of. It’s about figuring out 9,000 ways not to do something, which may lead you to one or two ways to do something, which may lead you to create one of the most popular apps or the largest companies in the world.
#3. Plus, Minus, Equal
This idea is to "get a mentor", "teach what you've learned" and lastly compete with, "You compete" with others.
The idea is to learn first then teach it to a fellow learner, which helps you grasp the skill and then compete.
#4. Idea muscle
Ok, let's face it. As Entrepreneur or content creators, we get lost cause we don't have any ideas as to what to build or write about.
James explains that ideas are like muscles, If you exercise you'll get better. You'll never be empty, You'll always have something to build or write about.
The tip here is to write 10 ideas every day. Make writing 10 ideas every day a habit. Then you'll never be empty.
Conclusion.
These are just a few takeaways from Skip The Line.
if you want to grow and learn faster and skip the line then I highly recommend you read it.
